The new charging hub at Copiapó’s Terrapuerto powers a fleet of 121 electric RED buses, marking a milestone in Chile’s clean mobility transition.

Chile’s Copec has inaugurated the Terrapuerto Electroterminal in Copiapó, officially transforming the city into the first in the Americas to operate a 100% electric public transport system. The new facility features 52 high-power charging points capable of energising a fleet of 121 standard RED electric buses, operated by Nueva Copiapó.
The project is part of Chile’s national strategy to advance cleaner, more efficient transport systems. Located within the Terrapuerto of Copiapó, the electroterminal enhances connectivity between intercity and local routes while promoting sustainable mobility. It is equipped with Tesla Megapack batteries, each capable of storing up to 3.9 MWh of energy, enough to power approximately 3,600 homes for an hour.
“This electroterminal not only transforms public transport in Atacama but demonstrates how innovation and technical expertise are making electromobility a reality across Chile,” said Andrea Castro, General Manager of Copec Voltex. “We’re proud to help democratise access to clean transport and position Chile as a global leader in electric mobility.”
By the end of 2025, Copec Voltex will operate 40 electroterminals nationwide, including facilities in Antofagasta, Valparaíso, and Biobío. In Santiago, its terminals already supply 100% renewable energy to over 2,500 electric buses, representing half of the city’s fleet and the largest outside China.
