OKQ8, Skellefteå Kraft and OK Västerbotten have opened two new hydrogen refueling stations in Storuman and Umeå, marking a significant expansion of northern Sweden’s low‑emission transport infrastructure. The stations are designed for both light‑duty and heavy‑duty hydrogen vehicles and aim to support the region’s move toward a more fossil‑free transport system.

The initiative is part of a broader partnership focused on building a reliable network for alternative fuels as demand grows for sustainable transport options. Hydrogen is increasingly seen as a crucial technology for long‑distance and heavy‑duty applications where battery‑electric vehicles may face range limitations.

Karin Eriksson, CEO of OKQ8, said: “To achieve climate targets, we need to build a robust system of alternative fuels. Hydrogen complements charging with renewable electricity and renewable diesel... The stations in Umeå and Storuman are specially adapted for the Arctic climate with low temperatures and demanding weather conditions to ensure high availability all year round.”

The new stations strengthen access to hydrogen in the region and aim to help businesses and public operators transition their fleets. Their placement along key northern routes also improves connectivity with central and southern Sweden, supporting the long‑term rollout of a national hydrogen network.

Joachim Nordin, CEO of Skellefteå Kraft, said: “Northern Sweden is well positioned to play a leading role in Sweden's energy transition... These stations are a concrete example of how collaboration is driving the transition forward.”

With Sweden accelerating plans to decarbonise heavy transport, the new sites represent an important step in establishing hydrogen as a viable fuel for demanding routes and harsh climates.
