The AA expands use of HVO in bid for net zero by 2035

Certas Energy is supplying biofuel to the British company to power 15 vehicles of its fleet and plans to increase the number further to 27 by the end of the year.

Certas Energy and The AA are marking one year of collaboration for the use of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), now powering a growing number of the British company’s recovery vehicles.
Since the start of the trial in January 2024, The AA has deployed three fully operational flatbed recovery trucks running on HVO. Over the past 12 months, these vehicles have covered more than 210,000 miles using over 66,000 litres of the low-emission fuel, achieving a 95% reduction in carbon emissions at the point of use.
As part of this strategy, the company has expanded the trial from three to 15 vehicles and plans to increase the number further to 27 by the end of the year.
“We’ve seen some fantastic results in terms of miles per gallon and a 95% emissions reduction. HVO is proving to be an exciting part of our alternative fuel ‘test and scale’ programme, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the next six months bring,” said Duncan Webb, Head of Fleet at The AA.
If the trial continues to yield positive results, more than 10% of its flatbed recovery fleet could soon be powered by HVO.
Certas Energy’s refuelling network and fuel card offering have played a key role in the project’s success. The partnership forms part of The AA’s broader ambition to reach net zero emissions across its operations by 2035, with fleet decarbonisation a top priority.
