7-Eleven looks to open 500 stores in U.S. and Canada
Last update: Dec 18, 2024
This expansion aligns with its goal to reach 100,000 stores in 30 countries by 2030.

Japan's Seven & i Holdings, the parent company of 7-Eleven, has announced plans to open 500 new convenience stores in the U.S. and Canada by 2027. This expansion aligns with its goal to reach 100,000 stores in 30 countries by 2030. Currently operating over 15,000 stores in North America, the company recently closed 444 underperforming locations to optimize its portfolio, reports Reuters.
The new stores will adopt a "New Standard" format, emphasizing fresh food, digital innovations, and enhanced fuel services. The rollout begins in 2025, with 125 stores slated for the first year.
This move comes amid corporate developments, including a $58 billion management buyout proposal from the founding Ito family to counter a $47 billion takeover bid by Canada's Alimentation Couche-Tard. The family is also exploring a potential U.S. listing of Seven & i’s North American business to raise $6.6 billion.
Industry observers are closely watching these initiatives, which could significantly impact the North American convenience store market.
