BP CEO Bernard Looney has resigned after admitting that he had not been “fully transparent” about previous relationships with colleagues, the company said on Tuesday.

Murray Auchincloss, the Company’s CFO, will act as CEO on an interim basis.

Looney has informed BP that he now accepts that he was not fully transparent in his previous disclosures.  He did not provide details of all relationships and accepts he was obligated to make more complete disclosure.

"The company has strong values and the board expects everyone at the company to behave in accordance with those values," a spokesman said.

"All leaders in particular are expected to act as role models and to exercise good judgement in a way that earns the trust of others."

Looney, 53, served just under four years at the helm of BP but began work at the London-based oil and gas company in 1991 at the age of 21.

He came into the role with big plans to achieve zero net emissions by 2050 and spend billions on renewable power.
