Chain adds five “Ieum Stores” to create jobs and social connections for older adults.

CU, operated by BGF Retail, is scaling up its senior-focused convenience store model in South Korea with the opening of five new “senior convenience stores” branded as Ieum Stores. The initiative is designed to create jobs for older adults and strengthen their participation in everyday community life.
Under an April agreement between BGF Retail and the Korea Labor Force Development Institute for the Aged, CU is rolling out senior-run outlets in partnership with regional senior clubs. The five newly opened stores are located in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Chungnam, Jeonbuk and Busan, with each site operated by a local senior club selected through a public call for projects.
At these CU stores, senior employees handle core in-store tasks such as ordering, stocking shelves and serving customers, earning stable income while maintaining daily social contact.
“CU’s senior convenience stores are places where older people can stay connected to society and regain energy in their daily lives,” said Choi Min-geon, head of BGF Retail’s ESG team, adding that the chain plans to further expand public-interest store formats that link generations and communities.
To support the model, the Korea Real Estate Board provides start-up funds via dedicated donations, while BGF Retail reduces initial barriers by waiving franchise fees and investment deposits and offering expanded training for store operators.
CU is also extending its inclusive retail strategy through “CU Seed Stores” for socially vulnerable entrepreneurs and dedicated convenience stores for people with severe disabilities, developed with public-sector partners.
