Three hydrogen-powered buses are now operating in Hobart as part of government-backed zero-emission initiative.

Foton Mobility Distribution has announced its participation in Metro Tasmania’s Hydrogen Electric Bus (HEB) trial, a project aimed at advancing zero-emission public transport in the state.
Since June, three Foton hydrogen-powered buses have been in service on Hobart routes. The vehicles run on locally produced renewable hydrogen and are refueled at Metro’s Mornington Depot, marking a significant step toward decarbonising Tasmania’s public transport system.
“This trial is a groundbreaking step in advancing zero-emission public transport in Tasmania,” Foton Mobility Distribution said in a statement. “We are proud to be part of this innovative journey toward a sustainable, zero-emission future.”
The trial is supported by the Tasmanian Government and involves collaboration with key partners, including H2H Energy and the Blue Economy CRC. By monitoring operations and performance, the project is expected to deliver critical insights that will help guide future investment in clean public transport fleets.
