Galp has become the first charging point operator in Portugal to install an electric vehicle (EV) charging system on street lights.

This project aims to expand the charging network in urban environments, enhancing convenience and accessibility. By leveraging public lighting infrastructure, the project also contributes to reducing the time and cost of installing new slow charging points.

This aims to mitigate the need for new power additions to the network and reduce occupation of additional space on public sidewalks.

“In the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Oporto, for example, more than half of family homes have no parking space or garage, which means that charging points will have to be provided by the public network through solutions like this,” said João Diogo Marques da Silva, executive director at Galp.

In addition to the points already in operation in the Junqueiro neighborhood, in Carcavelos, and at the former Matosinhos Refinery, the company will make more locations available across the country.

The project is also aligned with the goal of expanding Galp’s network of electric charging points, which currently has more than 5,500 locations in the country.
