H2 Mobility Deutschland and BASF have inaugurated a new hydrogen refueling station in Frankenthal, Rhineland-Palatinate. The facility is equipped to refuel hydrogen trucks and buses at 350 bar and passenger cars and light commercial vehicles at 700 bar.
Strategically located adjacent to the BASF site and close to the Ludwigshafen Nord interchange, the station aims to support the growing demand for hydrogen fuel in the Rhine-Neckar region. With a daily capacity of approximately 800 kg, the refueling station can service up to 30 hydrogen trucks and buses per day.
“The hydrogen refueling station that opened today in Frankenthal is another important step towards climate-neutral mobility. It complements the existing network for heavy commercial vehicles and buses in the Rhine-Neckar region, creating the conditions for local businesses to transition their fleets to hydrogen,” said Federal Minister Dr. Volker Wissing.
The station was constructed and is operated by H2 MOBILITY Deutschland, which is expanding the hydrogen infrastructure in the region in collaboration with BASF. The chemical company has invested in the station’s 350-bar module, highlighting its commitment to integrating hydrogen into its sustainability strategy.
“By investing in this refueling station, we are further expanding the intersections of the hydrogen economy in the region,” said Dr. Tilmann Hezel, Senior Vice President of Infrastructure at BASF’s Ludwigshafen site.
The facility’s launch is part of the H2Rivers project, which seeks to promote hydrogen mobility in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan area. Funded under the Federal Ministry’s National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology, the project has received up to €20 million in investment grants. The Frankenthal refueling station alone received €1.3 million in support.
H2 MOBILITY Deutschland is planning to further expand the facility by 2027, doubling its capacity and adding a second dispenser.
