The Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) and the Korea Gas Safety Corporation (KGS) have partnered to drive a safe and trustworthy hydrogen economy ecosystem.

Both entities signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the KRISS headquarters in Daejeon to focus on standardizing the hydrogen industry. Under the agreement, KRISS President Lee Ho-seong and KGS President Park Kyung-guk committed to building a collaborative framework that enhances the fairness of hydrogen trade and ensures safety across the hydrogen supply chain.

This MoU reflects a growing national effort to promote the hydrogen economy by integrating scientific standards and safety protocols, supporting innovation, and facilitating industry growth through consistent regulation and oversight.

In addition, both institutions will collaborate on establishing traceability systems and ensuring measurement consistency for complex metering devices used at hydrogen refueling stations.

The partnership also includes joint technical initiatives and R&D efforts at both the domestic and international levels, further strengthening Korea’s leadership in hydrogen-related standards and technologies.

This renewed emphasis on safety comes in the wake of a hydrogen bus explosion in Chungju in December 2024, which left three individuals seriously injured and prompted a nationwide review of safety protocols for hydrogen-powered public transport. The incident has intensified calls for robust standards, technical oversight, and reliable measurement systems throughout the hydrogen value chain.
