The company has plans for a major roll out to establish three LNG sites and 100 CNG locations nationwide.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has announced ambitious expansion plans for both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling services across its service station network.
Speaking at the simultaneous commissioning of 12 new CNG stations in Abuja and Lagos, Mallam Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative for Nigeria’s energy future.
“Delivering CNG to all Nigerians is not just a commitment; it is the right thing to do. Although we are starting later than we would have liked, we are determined to make rapid progress and ensure that CNG becomes a reliable and affordable energy source, mitigating the volatility we experience with petrol prices,” stated Kyari.
In addition to the new CNG stations, NNPC Ltd and its partners plan to build three LNG stations in Ajaokuta. This move aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support for enhancing domestic gas utilization, aimed at providing cleaner and more affordable energy to Nigerians.
Also present at the commissioning, Huub Stokman, Managing Director of NNPC Retail Limited, revealed plans to launch over 100 CNG sites within the next year, including 16 sites in partnership with NIPCO Gas.
“CNG offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional fuels, being approximately 40% cheaper than petrol in Nigeria. With ongoing investments, CNG will play a significant role in our energy mix,” Stokman added.
Following the removal of the fuel subsidy and the introduction of the Presidential CNG initiatives, NNPC Limited has spearheaded the deployment of Auto-CNG stations nationwide. The company, in collaboration with NIPCO Gas Limited, has already outlined plans for the construction of 35 CNG stations across Nigeria’s geographical zones.
