In a strategic move to accelerate the energy transition, Indonesia's state-owned energy giant, PT Pertamina, has announced a new partnership with Hyundai Motor Asia Pacific HQ aimed at establishing a robust hydrogen ecosystem in Indonesia.

Salyadi Dariah Saputra, Pertamina's Director of Strategy, Portfolio, and Business Development, stated that this partnership is a testament to the company's commitment to speeding up the energy transition and aligning with the Indonesian government's goal of achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060.

Pertamina has identified 17 potential hydrogen production sites spanning from Sumatra to Papua. Among these, a green hydrogen project is already underway at the Ulubelu geothermal site in Tanggamus Regency, Lampung province, with a target production capacity of 100 kg per day.

In addition to these upstream initiatives, Pertamina is pioneering the development of Indonesia's first integrated energy refueling station in Daan Mogot, West Jakarta. This pilot project will feature a Hydrogen Fuel Filling Station, offering a combination of fuel oil, natural gas, and hydrogen—all at a single location.

“He emphasized that green hydrogen is gaining global traction and could represent a significant growth area for Pertamina's future operations. However, the successful development of hydrogen infrastructure will require substantial investment and supportive policies from the government to foster a well-established hydrogen ecosystem within the transportation sector,” Salyadi said.

This partnership between Pertamina and Hyundai was formally established with the signing of a MoU on May 30, 2024.
