In this episode recorded at the NACS Show 2024 in Las Vegas, we spoke to Karl Doenges about his journey from working with natural gas, propane, and hydrogen to leading efforts in the EV charging space. He shares his insights into how the industry has evolved over the years, from the initial challenges of educating retailers about EV charging to the current focus on monetizing charging infrastructure by integrating it into in-store experiences.

Doenges highlights the role of data analytics in helping retailers understand charging patterns, utilization rates, and how to optimize the customer journey from the charging point to the store. The conversation also touches on the challenges posed by programs like NEVI, the frustrations with slow state-level implementation, and the growing trend of large operators taking control of their EV charging operations to enhance the customer experience.

Doenges is the EV Liaison at NACS and Executive Director of the Charging Analytics Program at the Transportation Energy Institute. Previously, he was an advisor for fuel, energy, technology and water to Cranberry Capital, and Vice President of Marketing and Government Affairs for Gradiant Corporation.

“Demographics are changing as the EV market scales. And despite the headlines, it is still growing and it's not going away. A lot of our retailers have realized this is something they definitely have to pay attention to. It’s gone from ‘let me try this’ out ‘to how do I optimize this?’ How do I make it better?”
