Customers in the Netherlands can now turn used bottles and cans into refunds at Shell checkouts.

Shell Netherlands has expanded access to the national deposit return system by enabling customers to redeem deposits on empty bottles and cans at almost 500 stations nationwide.
Under a new agreement with Statiegeld Nederland, part of recycling organisation Verpact, customers can return eligible plastic bottles and metal cans at the checkout of most Shell stations. The deposit can be used as a form of payment or refunded directly, making on-the-go returns more accessible.
The move significantly broadens the network of deposit return locations in the Netherlands. While motorway service stations were already required to accept deposit packaging, the partnership extends the service to a much wider range of branded sites, including stations off the highway.
Shell said the service adds convenience for customers on the road. “We are pleased that this cooperation allows us to offer an additional service at our stations,” said Christel Boevé, National Sales Manager at Shell Netherlands. “We want to make it as easy as possible for our guests while they are travelling.”
The initiative is designed to make deposit returns easier for consumers, helping to ensure that more used beverage containers are collected and recycled into new materials rather than discarded. To manage in-store handling, customers can return up to five deposit items per transaction.
