Shell Germany debuts Pay-Per-Use hydrogen solution for transport

Published on: Aug 3, 2023

Fleet operators are now able to borrow a hydrogen truck for a monthly fee to study the possibility of converting its entire fleet.

Shell has officially launched its new Pay-Per-Use hydrogen platform in Germany. This offers fleet operators the possibility of borrowing a hydrogen truck, including all necessary services, for a monthly fee in order to explore a possible conversion of the fleet to hydrogen-powered trucks.

The monthly rate is based on miles driven and, in addition to the vehicle,  includes the hydrogen, insurance and maintenance, operational instruction and customer support services.

The first 25 Shell-owned 15-ton fuel cell electric vehicles from manufacturer Paul Nutzfahrzeuge of the Mercedes-Benz Atego type will be available from the second half of 2023.

"We are driving progress by working with customers to build a hydrogen economy and accelerate the energy transition towards net zero emissions. Hydrogen-powered trucks can reduce carbon emissions because tailpipe emissions are only water vapor. Depending on the truck model, the range is up to 450 kilometers and refueling takes 15 minutes," said Andreas Janssen, Hydrogen Mobility Commercial Manager Europe at Shell.

The service also includes fully comprehensive insurance to be provided for drivers and vehicles to reduce operational risk. Instruction in the operation and refueling of the vehicle will be provided as well by Paul Nutzfahrzeuge GmbH.
