Shell has decided to permanently close its entire hydrogen refueling network in California for light-duty vehicles.

According to a report by Hydrogen Insight, the mobility company has pointed out “supply complications and other external market factors,” as the main reasons behind this decision. Only three hydrogen refueling stations (HRS) will remain, which only cater to heavy-duty vehicles.

Shell will focus its H2 efforts on decarbonizing the heavy-duty sector, while electric vehicles (EV) will encompass its alternative fuels strategy for light-duty vehicles.

The closed sites were located at Shell stations established across San Francisco, Berkeley, San Jose and Sacramento, according to a memo sent to participating station owners.

Back in September, the company told the media outlet that it had scrapped plans to establish 48 new hydrogen stations across California.

A similar scenario happened during 2022 in the United Kingdom, where Shell closed the three hydrogen filling stations it opened alongside Motive. At the time, both companies also mentioned a refocus strategy for heavy-duty vehicles.
