Electric vehicle (EV) charging provider ubitricity, a subsidiary of Shell, has secured the contract to continue operating 800 lamp post charging stations in Berlin as part of the city’s ElMobileBerlin initiative.

The new agreement runs through the end of 2032 and includes an option to install up to 250 additional charging points in seven Berlin districts that previously had no lamp post chargers. Significant upgrades have also been made to signage and ground markings at existing locations across five districts: Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Steglitz-Zehlendorf, Reinickendorf, Treptow-Köpenick, and Spandau.

Philipp Sindberg, Head of ubitricity Germany, commented:  “As a Shell company, ubitricity is now the largest charging point operator in Berlin after the city’s public utilities. Today, every third public charging point in Berlin is operated by ubitricity, and we plan to expand this number to well over 1,000 by the end of the year.”

Nearly 100 charging sites have already been retrofitted, with another 100 to 200 scheduled for installation by the end of this year. These improvements are designed to enhance usability and support Berlin’s goals for sustainable urban mobility.

The rollout of the additional charging points is expected to continue through 2025, depending on the pace of permitting processes. In addition to lamp post chargers, ubitricity currently operates 100 AC charging points in Berlin and plans to install another 200 by the end of 2025.
