Toyota expands hydrogen footprint in China with new JV

Published on: Apr 25, 2025

The new venture is focused on the production, commercialization, and sales of hydrogen fuel cell systems.

Toyota is deepening its commitment to hydrogen-powered mobility in China with the launch of a new joint venture (JV) alongside state-owned Shudao Group and its subsidiary, Sichuan Shudao Equipment Technology. The newly formed company (Shudao Toyota Hydrogen Energy Technology Co.) will be based in Chengdu, Sichuan, occupying a 10,000-square-meter facility.

This marks Toyota’s second hydrogen JV in China, following the 2023 debut of its R&D and production site in Beijing with SinoHyTec. The new venture is expected to become operational before the end of the year, focusing on the production, commercialization, and sales of hydrogen fuel cell systems.

Toyota’s earlier JV, Huafeng Fuel Cell Co., unveiled a 44,000-square-meter facility last year in Beijing, with the capacity to produce up to 10,000 fuel cell systems annually, targeting heavy-duty commercial vehicles.

As hydrogen gains momentum in China's transport transition, Toyota’s strategic partnerships are positioning the company to be a central player in this fast-evolving market.
