Certa expands HVO network to 25 sites in Ireland

The expansion builds on Certa’s 2023 debut of Ireland’s first fully dedicated HVO station in Liffey Valley.

Renewable fuel availability in Ireland has taken a significant step forward with Certa, a subsidiary of DCC plc, reaching 25 HVO fuel sites nationwide. The milestone comes as growing numbers of diesel drivers seek lower-carbon alternatives.
HVO, produced from waste plant matter, is a fossil-free fuel that can be used as a direct diesel substitute without engine modifications. According to Certa, the fuel can reduce carbon emissions by up to 90%, appealing to drivers keen to cut their environmental impact without investing in a new vehicle.
Certa’s newest HVO location in Portlaoise, opening this week, is the latest in a rapid rollout that has added 25 sites in just 18 months, spanning 17 counties. Fifteen of those sites have been launched in the past eight months, with a further five planned in the coming months.
The expansion builds on Certa’s 2023 debut of Ireland’s first fully dedicated HVO station in Liffey Valley, a €1 million investment. Today, the company operates 54 forecourt sites and claims the position of Ireland’s largest HVO supplier for motorists.
Orla Stevens, Managing Director at Certa Ireland, said the expansion reflects both market demand and the company’s broader environmental ambitions.
“The demand for HVO has grown as we have opened each new HVO fuel site across our network, and our plan is to complete the upgrading of our entire network into next year as we continue our journey towards a net zero future,” said Stevens.
According to Certa, diesel and petrol vehicles still make up 84% (2.14 million) of cars on Irish roads, with diesel accounting for 17% of new car sales so far in 2025. For many motorists, HVO offers a more immediate route to cutting emissions than replacing their vehicle with an EV.
