CU launches AI makeup palette kiosks across Korean c-store network

The retailer introduces an on‑site AI beauty service that lets shoppers create custom makeup palettes inside select convenience stores.

CU is introducing a new AI‑powered beauty service that allows customers to design their own makeup products directly inside the store, marking the first time a Korean convenience chain deploys personalized cosmetic creation through AI color analysis. The new “Makeup Palette Maker” kiosk is designed to measure a customer’s personal color, recommend suitable shades and instantly produce a finished makeup palette.
Shoppers begin by taking a photo at the kiosk, after which the AI analyzes their personal color and suggests shades that match their skin tone. Customers can also apply colors virtually on their own image before finalizing the palette. Each palette features four pans, two matte and two glitter, selected from more than 100 available shades. The products, which can be used as eyeshadow, blush or brow color, are manufactured with K‑FDA‑approved base materials to ensure safety.
“We wanted to offer a unique experience for women and foreign customers visiting our stores, so we introduced this new AI‑based beauty service,” said Minji Choi of BGF Retail’s Service Platform Team. “CU will continue analyzing the needs and preferences of key customer groups to rapidly develop new lifestyle services.”
CU has launched the kiosks at two Seoul locations, with two additional sites in Daechi’s academy district set to follow next month. The retailer plans to expand to around 100 locations this year, targeting areas with high foot traffic among women, students and foreign visitors such as university zones, academy clusters and tourist districts.
