EG Group considers $1B sale of Australian EG Ampol network

Ampol emerges as a likely buyer while UK-based retailer eyes a potential exit from the Australian market.

EG Group is studying the sale of its Australian service station network, EG Ampol, in a deal that could exceed $1 billion. The move would mark EG Group’s exit from the Australian market just five years after entering through a major acquisition from Woolworths.
According to a report by the Australian Financial Review, EG Group is in confidential discussions with potential buyers, including trade players and private equity firms. As part of a wider strategy, the company looks to reduce losses and streamline its global operations.
EG Group entered the Australian market in 2019 with the $1.73 billion purchase of 540 fuel and convenience sites from Woolworths, rebranding the network under the EG Ampol name.
As the branding and fuel product is already present, Ampol is cited to be the most likely candidate to acquire the portfolio.
If completed, the acquisition would further expand Ampol’s footprint in the fuel retail sector. The company has been active in M&A, having previously acquired Milemaker Petroleum in Melbourne, Gull New Zealand, SeaOil in the Philippines, and Z Energy in New Zealand.
