Hyundai Motor Company is set to establish its second hydrogen fuel cell production facility at its Ulsan plant, reinforcing its position in the hydrogen-powered electric vehicle (EV) market.

According to reports on Tuesday, the manufacturer is in discussions with the Ulsan plant’s labor union regarding the construction of the new hydrogen facility, which will be located adjacent to the factory’s existing auto transmission manufacturing site. This will mark its second hydrogen production facility following its first in Guangzhou, China, and will be the first of its kind in South Korea, as reported by The Korea Herald.

Construction is scheduled to commence this year, with mass production anticipated to begin by 2028. While the plant’s expected annual capacity has not been disclosed, Hyundai’s Guangzhou facility, which began operations in 2023, produces hydrogen fuel cell systems for 6,500 vehicles annually.

The fuel cells manufactured in Ulsan will power the company’s hydrogen-powered lineup, including the Nexo SUV, Ele City buses, and hydrogen trucks. Currently, the company sources its fuel cell systems from Unitus, a subsidiary of Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Motor Group’s auto parts manufacturing arm.

As part of its hydrogen strategy, Hyundai plans to launch the Initium hydrogen SUV this year, boasting a range of 650 kilometers on a single charge.
