SPAR Hungary continues its investment in solar power with a recent allocation of 80 million HUF (€204,714) to boost down photovoltaic operations.

The investment covered the installment of photovoltaic systems on the INTERSPAR Hypermarket in Pecs, thereby saving a month’s worth of energy consumed by the hypermarket. Through this strategy, the retailer aims to improve energy efficiency in stores, logistics centers, food production plants, and offices.

In 2023, the company generated 779 GJ (216,419 kWh) of renewable energy from photovoltaic systems installed on its stores. With a new project, this production capacity is expected to grow.

“For SPAR, environmental sustainability is extremely important. With the investments in improving energy efficiency, in 2023, the company’s total energy consumption was cut by more than 5.5% compared to the year before,” said Márk Maczelka, head of communications at SPAR Hungary.

The new investment in the INTERSPAR Hypermarket in Pécs consists of a photovoltaic system and battery storage with smart control, enabling not only production of renewable energy, but also storage for peak consumption hours. The system allows the hypermarket to save money with self-generated power and be less dependent on the local electricity grid.

Recent investment is part of the ongoing sustainability project, with photovoltaic systems already installed last year in stores across the cities of Szeged, Dorog, Pécs and Göd.
