TruAlt Bioenergy, India’s largest ethanol producer, has been granted Oil Marketing Company (OMC) status, marking a major step in its entry into the country’s fuel retail sector.

With the authorization, TruAlt will establish over 100 flex-fuel retail outlets offering a mix of ethanol (E93), Bio-CNG, petrol, diesel, and EV services, with initial locations in Karnataka and Maharashtra.

The company’s vertically integrated model positions it among the few private biofuel firms licensed to retail petroleum products in India. TruAlt plans to set up at least 5% of its outlets in remote areas, supporting last-mile energy access and contributing to the national clean energy agenda.

“This milestone allows us to directly serve India’s evolving fuel needs while focusing on integrating biofuels and expanding rural outreach,” said Vijay Nirani, Managing Director of TruAlt Bioenergy. The rollout is expected to generate over 2,000 jobs, while also promoting circular sustainability by sourcing agri-residue and biomass from local farmers.

The move comes amid record fuel demand in India and accelerating ethanol blending, which reached 19.7% in February 2025, bringing the country closer to its 20% target.

TruAlt holds a 7% share in molasses-based ethanol and 3.7% of total ethanol supply in India, and is rapidly expanding into compressed biogas (CBG) and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with plans for a 10 crore litre SAF facility.
