Chilean Copiapó to become a regional milestone in sustainable urban mobility.

Copec will build and energize a new electric vehicle (EV) charging terminal that will make Copiapó the first city in South America with a 100% electric public transport system.
The project, located at the city’s main Terrapuerto terminal, is part of the Chilean Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications’ national e-mobility program. The initiative aims to replace traditional bus fleets with cleaner, high-standard electric alternatives.
The new charging hub will feature 52 high-power charging points capable of supporting 121 fully electric RED-standard buses operating across 12 routes. Copec Voltex, a subsidiary of Copec, will oversee operations at the facility using 100% renewable energy and integrated load management software.
The terminal’s strategic location will ensure a direct connection between intercity buses and local public transit, improving the daily commute for thousands of passengers.
“This project will not only fully electrify Copiapó’s main public transport system, but also deliver a clean, modern, and high-quality mobility solution. With partnerships like this, we’re helping to democratize electromobility and deliver environmental and social benefits across the country,” said Andrea Castro, General Manager of Copec Voltex.
The buses will be equipped with features such as air conditioning, USB charging ports, accessibility for people with reduced mobility, and real-time monitoring and safety systems.
The Copiapó terminal is part of Copec Voltex’s broader expansion strategy. In addition to operating 12 EV charging terminals in Santiago, the company plans to roll out 20 more across the country this year, reaching about 55% of the electric bus fleet in the Metropolitan Region.
