Shell has announced the construction of a test center for EV charging infrastructure in Germany to set a new benchmark in the development of megawatt charging solutions.

Located at the Shell Technology Centre Hamburg, the new facility will support testing of charging capacities up to five megawatts, specifically tailored for heavy-duty electric vehicles. These include trucks, buses, tractors, construction equipment, and even electric ships.

Designed for operations in the medium-voltage range, the site will simulate both everyday and extreme environmental conditions. This will allow Shell and its partners to evaluate hardware-software interoperability, reliability, and performance.

“Fast and efficient charging is vital, especially in freight and logistics, where time is money. Our test center targets this need directly by enabling the evolution of solutions and fostering collaboration across the sector,” said Felix Faber, Chairman of Shell Germany.

The Hamburg facility will not only drive Shell’s own innovations, such as those from Shell Recharge, ubitricity, and SBRS; but will also serve as a resource for OEMs and infrastructure providers.

With 12 automated test stands, over 50 flexible testing stations, climate chambers, and a wide range of configurations, partners can simulate real-world use cases and fine-tune their systems for power output, efficiency, safety, and practicality.

The project further strengthens the Shell Technology Centre Hamburg’s role as a global hub for e-mobility expertise within the Shell Group.
